Passive Transport
Passive Transport
The above is a trailer for Passive Transport. The original presentation of this piece existed as an installation at Abbott Hall on Northwestern University’s Downtown Chicago Campus. Find a description of the the installation here and documentation of the installation below.
Logline:
A sensory experiment on 16mm, Passive Transport takes an intimate look at the emotional and physical boundaries that are broken and rebuilt during the tattooing process.
Synopsis:
Passive Transport is a sensory exploration of the art and practice of tattooing. Following one tattoo artist and multiple clientele, of varying relation to her; the audience is situated as closely as possible to the physical act of ink being deposited into the skin. The intimacy of tattooing is often a factor that can be overlooked when deciding to get a tattoo, but Passive Transport aims to highlight the relationship and connections that are fostered during the process. Highlighted and punctuated by the sounds of the space, the machine, and the conversations being held; the visual and auditory worlds combine to activate the senses of the audience; placing them in the seat of the client and into the throes of that intimacy.
Eating the Sky
Synopsis:
Indigo dyeing techniques have been passed down through generations and cultures around the world in an attempt for humans to capture the blue they see everyday above them. Through reduction and oxidation processes, the indigo compound, found in a variety of plants, transforms into leuco-indigo. The water spreads this compound, saturates the fabric, and, when removed from the dye bath, the reintroduced oxygen creates the deep blue we know and covet.
Eating the Sky pairs a collection of recordings that reflect the dyeing process as well as the overarching intersections of craft, femininity, and community with the linear documentation and performance of the indigo dyeing process. This project was developed using a sound-first approach, where the soundtrack was created before the visuals were conceived. This is a practice I have adapted and worked into my own pedagogical practice. The EP that the soundtrack for this film comes from can be found here and further information on sound-first filmmaking as a pedagogical practice can be found here.
