Artist Statement

I am a multidisciplinary practitioner who focuses on the creation of film, sound, and art objects. Coming from a performance background, with a focus on theatrical performance, performance art, and narrative filmmaking; my work seeks to move between digital and physical spaces, crossing boundaries in both theoretical and material ways. While my primary mode of creation sits within the art and film world, my practice is heavily rooted in critical theory and pedagogical research. These interests fuel not only my writing, but creative processes as well.

My work focuses on the transgression of boundaries between the internal and external; specifically, the boundaries between the digital and the ‘IRL’.  I am interested in how we represent the digital on physical media and search for opportunities where these spaces can overlap. In my upcoming film and installation piece, Passive Transport, the digital world of tattooing is shown strictly on celluloid; bringing about a different quality to the screens and interactions that take place in the digital sphere. Conversely, in my desktop documentary work, physical media is mimicked and represented through a completely digital form of filmmaking. Bringing in traditional methods of craft and physical media, the intersection of the virtual forms of the internet and the physical space of creation becomes the playing field for my work.

Materiality and form are incredibly important to me. The body has long been a site of conflict, a conflict that I feel a deep connection to. Utilizing the physical nature of our being and establishing it as a site of transgression and boundary exploration is an important aspect of my work. Texture, shape, and tactility of a piece; even one that exists only on a screen, is integral to my process– finding ways to make the intangible, tangible through exploration and creation. Living in a world that is so split between two spheres of existence, I feel the need to explore the boundaries of these spaces, how it impacts our mind and body, and the ways in which it influences our relationships with each other and world.
